entomologist

an emptied jar

holds

recycled nails,

brackish water

guppies,

and abandoned

bones

but it is best

for nail polish remover,

a brushfoot butterfly,

and a pin

above the abdomen.

in south texas humidity

flightless mockingbird chicks

have swooping mothers

shriveled lawn frogs

cannot asphyxiate

and ceramic mummies

do not fear the dark
