Two Poems by Isaac Chavarria

entomologist

an emptied jar
holds
recycled nails,
brackish water
guppies,
and abandoned
bones

but it is best
for nail polish remover,
a brushfoot butterfly,
and a pin
above the abdomen.

in south texas humidity

flightless mockingbird chicks
have swooping mothers

shriveled lawn frogs
cannot asphyxiate

and ceramic mummies
do not fear the dark

Isaac Chavarría is a pocho from Alton, Texas and earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Texas-Pan American. He enjoys assisting non-profit organizations in creating chapbooks for workshop participants. His poems have been published inAcentos Review and Rio Grande Review online. Ultimately, he hopes the term pocho will represent a positive identity rather than a pejorative.
